I Know Whom I Have Believed - Oidmike's Today's Hymn (2022)

I Know Whom I Have Believed

2 Timothy 1:12

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

I know not why God’s wondrous grace

To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own.

But I know Whom I have believèd,

And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.

I know not how this saving faith

To me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His Word
Wrought peace within my heart.

I know not how the Spirit moves,

Convincing us of sin,
Revealing Jesus through the Word,
Creating faith in Him.

I know not what of good or ill

May be reserved for me,
Of weary ways or golden days,
Before His face I see.

I know not when my Lord may come,

At night or noonday fair,
Nor if I walk the vale with Him,
Or meet Him in the air.

My Thoughts:

It does not matter if we understandwhy God showed such marvelous grace to unworthy souls as us, we just need to accept this grace.

ButHe is able to give such love to those who believe in Him, and I am persuaded that He indeed does, and will keep us safe in Him unto the day of His coming.

I don't know all the ins and outs of His impartation of faith to us, nor do I understand just how believing in His Wordaffects change, but Ihave His peace in my heart now.

I cannot explain how the Spirit changes hearts, making us feel shame over our sins without condemning, butI do know that He does so by revealing Jesus to us through the Word.

Some day soon our Lord will come again to earth to gather His saints together unto Himself and the Father, don't know if that will happen morning, noon, or night, but either way, whether by death or rapture, we will be with Him forever!

Amazed at His grace,

My Thoughts:

How amazing that God has looked upon such evil creatures as we, and still gave grace to us; how loving He is to redeem out of His love forus.

My Thoughts:

When I consider what my thought patterns used to be, I find it totally amazing that God could love me enough to extend His grace my way, I was such a mental mess, yet Christ loved me anyway and offered His precious salvation to me!

The Greek word used in 1 Timothy 1:12 for "believeth" connotes more than mere assent to veracity, but it connotes trust in the abilities of the One who gave His life for us, and is protecting and guiding us into the presence of His Father.

I don't know the process the Lord uses to change the heart, mind, and spirit of the sinner to having faith in Him, I don't know how reading the Word of God, which would, but for the grace of God, condemn me, but I know whom I have believed....

I don't know how the breath of God (for such is one of the definitions of Pneuma, translated "Spirit" many places in the NT) blows away the dust of our sins in our minds, nor how it opens the eyes of (spiritually) dead men, and creating this faith, this trust, but I know whom I have believed....

I don't know what good and pain lays in wait for me on this narrow road to heaven, I don't know how many tiring days of labor for the Lord I have before I see His loving face, but I know whom I have believed....

The Lord has not yet revealed when He is coming to catch us away to be with Him forever, but be ready at any time of day, morning, noon, or at night, we don't know if we will suffer death, of be translated from mortality to immortality (1 Cor 15:53) in the twinkling of an eye as we meet Him in the air, but I know whom I have believed ....

Knowing whom I believe in,

Mike Wilson

My Thoughts:

In the Psalms David asks, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?" It is amazing that God thinks enough of us to shed His grace on us, and to love us enough to call us His own beloved.

It is so nice to know in whom we trust, and to believe that He has the power to guard what we have put into His hand unto the day we stand before Him in the coming day of judgment.

How does God work His saving faith in us, how does reading the written Word bring us peace? We cannot explain it, but we must trust that it does.

What does the Spirit do to us that convinces us of our sins, we don't know, but we know that by the Spirit we are brought to belief through reading the written Word, where Jesus is revealed to our understanding.

It is not for us to know the mountains and valleys lay in our path, or how many pleasures and pains we will go through before we see our Lord's face, but we must continue to trust Him.

When the Lord comes for us is not for us to know, not the hour nor the day, we don't know if we will die today, or if we will be here when Jesus comes again, but we will continue to trust in Him either way.

Knowing in whom I believe,

Mike Wilson

My Thoughts:

I am mostunworthy of God's grace, and I have no answer as to why He would call me to be His own, looking at my record, I can't seewhy Christ's love was extended to me His redemption.

What a comfort to know that wehave been persuaded tobelieve in the only One who can keep us, and all the caresthat we have entrusted to Him,against the day of His glorious coming.

I don't know how He persuaded me tohave faith in Him, I don't know how mere belief in God's Wordbrings peace to the sinner's heart, but I know whom I have believed in.

It is a mystery how the Spirit does His work to convince us of our sin, or how His revelation in theBibleof the Savior makes such an impression of the sinful heart that we have faith in Him, but I know whom I have believed in.

I don't know what the future holds, whathardship or easethe Lord has planned for me to tread before I see His blessed face, but I know whom I have believed in.

Jesus is coming again, but we have no idea when, at night, oratnoonday, I don't know if we will die before He comes, or if we will be caught up to meet Him in the air.

Amazed at His grace,

Mike Wilson

My Thoughts:

(Video) Mike Tyson - The Hardest Puncher in Boxing Ever!

Because His ways are so far above ours, our understanding of why He chose to love us and reveal Himself to us will likely not happen this side of glory, nor will we likely comprehend why, even though we are unworthy of His love, He loves us anyway, and redeemed us to Himself and the Father.

But knowing in whom we have placed our trust, we can depend on His ability to keep safe all of ourselves that we have placed in His care, and that He will safely bring us through to the day of His coming to earth again.

We don't know just how Jesus gave us this faith that saves us, nor how just believing, sometimes without understanding, has worked His peace into our hearts.

We can't describe just how the Spirit of God has caused us to hate our old sins, or how His revelation of Jesus in the Bible has created the faith in Him that we now know.

What lies before us as we journey to heaven, how much dark or happy experiences God has planned for us to experience, or how many days we have left to accomplish the mission He has set before us before we see Him face to face.

When will our Lord Jesus Christ come for us? Will it be in the middle of the day, or during the night? Will we walk with Him into our grave, or will will we be caught away to meet Him in the air? No matter which He chooses for us, this one thing we know ...

Amazed at His grace,

Mike Wilson

My Thoughts:

Knowing our sinfulness, it is hard to understand why the Creator of all would love us enough to create such a plan of salvation, yet He has such grace that He calls us His own.

Thankfully we have come to know the Lord is trustworthy, we trust that He is keeping us safe until we reach heaven's shores.

How God puts faith into our hearts I don't know, nor how just believing His words brings peace to the soul.

I don't know how the Spirit moves in us to show us our sins, but I am glad He does, for He reveals to us our Savior, thus building in us, through reading His Word, more faith.

Other than our ultimate destination of being in our Lord's presence, the future is not clearly revealed to us, but it is in His plan for us between now and when we see His lovely face.

What day or hour the Lord will come again is not ours to know, will we see the grave, or will we be caught away? Which ever it is, we know whom we have believed.

Daniel Whittle“I Know Whom I Have Believed”by Daniel W. Whittle The United Methodist Hymnal , 714. Daniel Webster Whittle (1840-1901) wrote multiple hymns texts under the pseudonym “El Nathan.” Whittle fought in the army during the American Civil War and marched with General William Tecumseh Sherman through Georgia.. Major Whittle, who composed around 200 hymn texts, continued to travel on evangelist tours in North America and Great Britain with Moody and Bliss until his death (Watson and Young, n.p.. One of his more popular hymns, it was first published in Gospel Hymns, No 4 (New York, 1883), edited by a distinguished trio of gospel song musicians and promoters that included Dwight Moody’s evangelist, Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908), McGranahan, and George C. Stebbins (1846-1945).. This hymn has been extremely popular in the United States, and it can be found in every Southern Baptist hymnal since The Baptist Hymn and Praise Book (Nashville, 1904), in The United Methodist Hymnal (1989), as well as in more than 200 other hymnals published in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain.. The tune of this hymn sounds like a typical gospel hymn tune with modest harmony and simple melodic lines.. This hymn features four stanzas, and the title comes from the first line of the refrain.. The first stanza addresses how we cannot understand God’s saving grace; the second stanza addresses how we cannot explain our faith in the Word; the third stanza addresses how we cannot comprehend the work of the Holy Spirit; and the fourth stanza addresses how we cannot clearly perceive the future of our earthly lives.. The refrain contrasts with these stanzas by reminding us that even if we cannot fully know the mysteries of our faith, we are fully known by God and we do know by faith that God is true to his word.. While the version of “I Know Whom I Have Believed” in The United Methodist Hymnal contains four stanzas, some editions of this hymn feature an additional stanza.. The fourth stanza in The United Methodist Hymnal is actually the fifth stanza in the original text.

The nurse said that he thought Major Whittle was a Christian because he had observed him constantly reading the Scripture and the Major Whittle did not cuss as the other men.. In the first verse, there are two Biblical words that are doctrines within themselves, the word Grace and the word Redeemed.. All of the other New Testament appearances of grace is the word charis and it speaks of "the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues". The other Bible word used in the first verse of "I Know Whom I Have Believed" is the word Redeemed and it appears 142 times in 119 verses in some form of redeem, or redeemed.. In the lines of the third verse Major Whittle makes it clear that it is the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, that convinces man of sin.. The lines "Revealing Jesus through his Word" and "Creating faith in Him" takes us to the book of Romans chapter 10 verse 13 where the Bible says "so then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.7 Adam Clarke in his commentary on this verse said: "Preaching the Gospel is the ordinary means of salvation; faith in Christ is the result of hearing the word, the doctrine of God preached.. Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:" Man's Conscience testifies to the fact that there is good and evil and that there is a God "...that which may be known of God is manifest in them...".. God has put in the conscience of every man the fact that there is a higher power, and this knowledge of the conscience, this light, this witness, testifies to the fact that there is a God - but this alone will not save a man.. It is only by the testimony and witness of the Cross that a man or woman may be saved, and that testimony is revealed in the Word of God.. If however they were to accept the testimony of the conscience and creation, God can and often does send a missionary thousands of miles with the message of the witness of the cross so that man may hear the Word, believe and be saved.. Verse four is a testimony of Daniel Whittle of his faith in the Lord Jesus, that no matter what the days may hold, that he will see the face of God.

In listening to a sermon this morning on 2 Timothy 1, the speaker mentioned the Hymn I Know Whom I Have Believed , and the story of its author, Major Daniel Webster Whittle.. This beloved hymn written by Major Daniel Webster Whittle, the exact date of his composition is not known, but it was originally published in 1883 in Gospel Hymns No.. It is one of his most well-known hymns, one other popular hymn that he wrote is “There Shall Be Showers of Blessings” If you look at these two hymns for the authorship you may be a bit confused, you will see the name El Nathan on the left hand side indicating that El Nathan wrote the Lyrics, and you will see James McGranahan on the right hand side, indicating that he wrote the music.. El Nathan is a pseudonym – a fictitious name used by a person or sometimes a group, which Daniel Webster Whittle used.. He was named after the great American politician Daniel Webster who was greatly admired by Whittle’s father.. The nurse told Major Whittle that he (the nurse) was a wicked man and could not pray.. Major Whittle confessed that he too was wicked man with many sins in his own life and could not pray either.. The nurse said that he thought Major Whittle was a Christian because he had observed him constantly reading the Scripture and the Major Whittle did not cuss as the other men.. Here, in Major Whittle’s own words, is what took place that night: “I dropped on my knees and held the boy’s hand in mine.. Later he would work closely with the man who would set to music many of his later songs, and who set the music to this song, “I Know Whom I Have Believed”, James McGranahan.. Major Whittle died March 4, 1901 after having written over 200 hymns.. 2 Timothy 1 (ESV) 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,. 2 To Timothy, my beloved child:. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 which is why I suffer as I do.. Before this occasion, Moses himself had a hard time believing God and trusting Him (see Exodus chapter 4).. Thomas saw Jesus and touched His hands and side and exclaimed, “My Lord and my God .” Jesus responded with these words for all of us.. Looking at belief first, we need go no further than John 3:16; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life .” This is a fundamental pillar of the Christian faith and a great promise from God to us all.. . . belief in Jesus is the key to forgiveness of sins and eternal life.. In Mark Chapter 7 we find one of the lesser known but very instructive teachings of Jesus regarding faith (belief).. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.”. In that same chapter John recorded Jesus’ words as follows.. “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”. So, if I am working on my own faith or witnessing to another regarding belief in Jesus, we should all pray for God to open our (their) eyes.

As a teacher, my job was to guide students into a base of knowledge about the English language (and especially spoken communication) so that they would be prepared to adequately speak, read, write, explain, defend, and use it.. My job was to have an answer– or know where to find it.. Photo by Vera Arsic on Pexels.com Some people will listen to us merely to scoff and try to make us lose heart or make us look foolish.. And our answers should be given with gentleness and respect– not arrogance and snide judgment.. I don’t have hope because I know answers to tough questions.. I don’t know about the future– I can’t explain why God allows evil (there are compelling arguments for some reasons, but no absolute answer that stops the question)–I don’t know how God’s Spirit moves, or why He drew me to Himself.. My job is not to explain God–only God is big enough and wise enough to do that– but to reflect His character in a changed nature, and to explain what God has done in my life to effect that change.. My hope is in the ONE I choose to trust– the ONE who does have the answers!

Saints, we need to hurry to perform our part of the great commission Jesus gave us in Matt 28:19-20 to share the Gospel that God is Light; for He who made all creation does not desire that any should perish in the various shades of shadows that hide the brilliance of God's holy Light.. O people of God, hurry. to fulfill the mission God has given, to go forth to announce to all the world. that God is the True Light; let them know that god is not willing that they. should perish (2 Peter 3:9), or be lost in the darkness of sin.. In Romans 10:14-17 we are. taught that we didn't come to the Lord until we were preached to, and it is the. same for all others, and according to the Great Commission, it is our duty to go. preach to the sinner, that they may be saved from perdition because the Lord. laid His life down for us: be prompt to answer the Lord's unction, for who knows. but that you maybe that person's last chance to hear the Gospel and be saved,. and be another jewel in God's crown.. O people of God, let us hurry to fulfill the high calling God has called us to; to proclaim to all the world His great Light, to let them know that God does not want any to eternally perish, to be lost to eternal darkness.. Do not withhold from God your children, instill in them the precious Word of God, that they may spread the glorious message of the gospel; give all manner of support to the missionary calling of your youth; be sure to keep them covered prayer, that victory in Jesus may be spread far and wide; hurry saints, to fulfill your calling, that that bright day come soon.. Jesus gave to us the Great Commission in Matt 28:20, so let us proceed to be obedient and tell them the God in whom we have our being, loves them all; declare to them how Jesus left His throne in heaven to come to earth to save them, that we may live with Him in heaven.
